Sony and Samsung have been outlining how the proliferation of connected TVs could enable Pay TV operators to distribute their services around the home without the capital cost of additional set-top boxes (STB). While the immediate interest is in eliminating the second set-tops needed to enable multi-room TV, there is a belief that connected TVs could become the main network termination point and service gateway for Pay TV content coming into subscription TV homes. If this model were adopted universally, it would spell the end of the Pay TV set-top box.
