The Hermes Project: WebOS thrown to the open source wolves

After much deliberation, Hewlett-Packard HP have finally decided what to do with the WebOS operating system they acquired with the USD$1.2bn purchase of Palm last year – and which chief executive Meg Whitmans predecessor was keen to close down.

The software and consulting firm is to turn the mobile operating system over to the open source community for enthusiasts to develop it further in the near future, along with tools to aid developers – ending rumours that they were instead going to sell it off, as they intended to do with their PC division until they changed their mind on that too.
